Raising awareness of depression in hopes of preventing suicides.
The Johnny Foundation would like to ask you to support the 4th annual Johnny Leathers, Jr. Memorial Golf Tournament benefiting the American Foundation for Suicide Prevention (AFSP) being held May 19th, 2007 at Woodmont Golf and Country Club. We have been blessed to have raised over $46,000 in the last three tournaments targeting College Student Prevention Programs in hopes of preventing just one of the suicides that tragically ends the lives of 1,100 college students every year. Last year's tournament helped fund AFSP's On-line College Screening Project at Emory University. This web-based project reaches out to students with serious depression and other problems who would not otherwise have sought help. A three-year pilot test of the outreach method showed the project is effective in resolving the students concerns about treatment through engaging in anonymous online dialogues with a counselor. At-risk students who exchanged dialogues were found to be three times more likely to eventually come for an in-person evaluation and to enter treatment. We have seen evidence that awareness does work and desperately need your help to raise awareness, give hope and reach the nearly one million people in the U.S. who attempt to end their lives every year.
The Johnny Foundation continues to raise funds each year through a mail out fundraiser. They pray you will continue to support their efforts to raise funds for those who are unable to pay for the counseling so desperately needed. Just click on the donation button on top of this page.
